LONDON (June 16, 2025) – Will Smith has made a surprising revelation in a recent interview with UK radio station Kiss Xtra (via HuffPost): he was originally offered the lead in Christopher Nolan’s 2010 blockbuster Inception but turned it down—because he didn’t understand the plot.
“Chris Nolan offered me Inception first, but I didn’t get it… those movies that go into alternate realities… they don’t pitch well. But I am hurt by those, too,” Smith admitted .
He said he had never publicly discussed it before, but now the missed opportunity joins others on his list of career regrets.
Nolan’s sci-fi thriller, which grossed over $839 million worldwide, features a mind-bending narrative about shared dreams. Brad Pitt was reportedly Nolan’s original choice before negotiations fell through—and Smith’s decision left the door open for Leonardo DiCaprio to secure one of his biggest hits.
In the same interview, Smith labeled passing on The Matrix (1999) as his most painful decision. He recalls the Wachowskis’ pitch as intriguing but conceptually confusing:
“[They said] imagine if you could stop in mid-jump, then people could see around you 360°… We’re going to invent these cameras …” .
The role went to Keanu Reeves, launching a defining franchise—but Smith said the explanation simply didn’t resonate with him.
Smith also revealed that he declined Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained because the titular character didn’t dominate the story—and he and Tarantino saw the film’s tone very differently.
“Django wasn’t the lead … I thought it was brilliant. Just not for me,” Smith said. “I needed to be the lead!” .
In 2015, Smith told The Hollywood Reporter he wanted the narrative to focus on love rather than revenge:
“I wanted to make the greatest love story that African‑Americans had ever seen … violence begets violence … love had to be the answer” .
The film was eventually released in 2012 starring Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, becoming Tarantino’s highest-grossing movie ($426 million) with five Oscar nominations .
Despite these near-misses, Smith remains one of Hollywood’s biggest names. Yet his openness offers a refreshing takeaway: even superstar actors wrestle with doubt and uncertainty—and sometimes regret can shape the paths they ultimately walk.
“It hurts too bad to talk about,” he said of The Matrix, summing up the bittersweet nature of his choices .
