Ryan Coogler’s latest cinematic endeavor, Sinners, has emerged as a standout in 2025’s film landscape. Blending supernatural horror with historical drama, the film has not only achieved impressive box office numbers but also acquired critical acclaim for its storytelling and performances.

Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners follows twin brothers Elijah “Smoke” and Elias “Stack” Moore—both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan—who return home after years in Chicago’s criminal underworld. Using stolen funds, they purchase a sawmill from a racist landowner, intending to transform it into a juke joint for the Black community. Their cousin, Sammie, an aspiring guitarist, joins them despite objections from his father, Pastor Jedediah, who warns of the blues’ supernatural ties. As their music awakens ancient spirits, the brothers confront both literal and metaphorical demons to protect their community.

The film boasts a powerful ensemble cast. Wunmi Mosaku delivers a compelling performance as Annie, a Hoodoo priestess guiding the brothers through spiritual peril. Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O’Connell, Miles Caton, and Delroy Lindo round out the ensemble, each contributing depth to the narrative.

Beyond its horror elements, Sinners delves into themes of generational trauma, faith, racial injustice, and the enduring strength of community. Coogler weaves history and horror into a cinematic tapestry that’s both thought-provoking and thrilling.

Critics have hailed Sinners as one of Coogler’s most ambitious works. Jamie Lee Curtis, after viewing the film in 70mm IMAX, described it as a “revelation of scale and soul,” praising its cinematic artistry and storytelling complexities. Audiences have responded enthusiastically, with the film maintaining strong box office performance weeks after release.

Wunmi Mosaku shared in an interview with Vogue that the role of Annie allowed her to reconnect with ancestral roots and explore the depth of Hoodoo practices. “I felt like Annie was going to change my life,” Mosaku stated, highlighting the character’s significance in the narrative.

Shot using IMAX cameras, Sinners offers a visually immersive experience. The period-accurate design, powerful soundscapes, and Ludwig Göransson’s original score ground the supernatural elements in emotional realism. The film’s success in premium formats, including IMAX, underscores its cinematic impact.

Since its release on April 18, 2025, Sinners has grossed over $236 million worldwide, positioning it as one of the year’s top-performing films. Despite competition from major franchises, the film’s unique blend of genres and compelling narrative have resonated with audiences globally.

In an era dominated by sequels and reboots, Sinners stands out as a testament to original storytelling. Ryan Coogler’s fusion of horror, history, and cultural commentary offers a cinematic experience that is both entertaining and meaningful. As the film continues to captivate viewers, it reinforces the power of cinema to explore complex themes through engaging narratives.
