More than luck— How Kazungu built his career

In a world where many dream but few dare, Alain Gilbert Umuhire hustled his way into the spotlight of Rwandan cinema — one small opportunity at a time. His story reminds us that while others can help open doors, true success depends on how fiercely we chase our dreams.

Early dreams and beginnings

Alain Gilbert Umuhire, born on November 28, 1995, in Ngororero District, western Rwanda, is the second of four children. From a young age, he dreamt of becoming a superstar singer and actor. Singing felt real to him while at school, where he was an active member of the singing group. However, acting seemed distant — he had no connections and no clear path.

Despite the uncertainty, Alain found confidence in leadership roles, serving as a rugby team captain during his school years. “I believed that if I kept working hard, I would go far no matter what,” he recalled.

Breaking into the industry

After completing secondary school, Alain heard about scholarship opportunities in filmmaking and enrolled at Kigali Film and Production School for six months. There, he began meeting seasoned actors, including Manzi from Amarira y’Urukundo.

One life-changing encounter was with director John Kwezi, who became a mentor and opened many doors for him. Through Kwezi’s support, Alain joined unions within the Rwanda Film Federation, meeting actors from the famous TV series Seburikoko.

His breakthrough came when Muyobozi(NTAKIRUTIMANA Ibrahim), an actor from Seburikoko, helped him secure a one-day acting role. But Alain wasn’t satisfied. Recognizing his skills in camera work and lighting, he asked to join the team as an intern helper(runner) and gaffer. His dedication paid off. After working on three seasons behind the scenes, he was hired officially.

Opportunity knocked again when he was offered the role of Nepo in Seburikoko. His performance resonated with audiences and marked the beginning of his acting career.

“I still remember the day I stood on the Seburikoko set. Coming from a small village, it felt surreal. I even took a photo to capture the moment,” Alain said, smiling.

Overcoming hardships

Success didn’t come without challenges. After gaining fame as Nepo, Alain faced unexpected pressure. Many people assumed he was wealthy and treated him differently.

“I had to remind myself who I was, where I came from, and what I wanted. Staying true to myself kept me grounded,” he shared.

Financial difficulties also tested his resolve. Though he earned some income, it wasn’t enough to meet society’s expectations. He even turned down a scholarship at the University of Rwanda to pursue acting full-time.

When Seburikoko paused production for four months, Alain found himself unable to pay his rent. Rather than give up, he traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo in search of work to support himself. His passion for acting kept him moving forward, even during the toughest times.

Success and recognition

After his breakout as Nepo, Alain’s career blossomed. He landed the role of Kazungu in Umuturanyi, a character that pushed him out of his comfort zone and became a fan favorite. He also appeared as Alain in Papa Sava, a comedy series.

Behind the scenes, Alain’s technical skills didn’t go unnoticed. From gaffer, he rose to become a line producer at ZACU Entertainment, one of Rwanda’s leading production companies. Today, he juggles multiple roles as an actor, producer and director(sometimes). He worked on his own project, A Virgin Girl Series and is currently working on another project of him called Impamvu series which is set to be released on 1st May.

Challenging roles

Some roles deeply challenged Alain.
In an HDI advertisement film Ingamba, he portrayed a man dating an 11-year-old girl — a role that tested his limits emotionally.
Another challenge came in Papa Sava, acting as Nyiragitariro’s boyfriend in a relationship dynamic he initially found confusing. Yet, driven by love for his craft, he delivered each performance with professionalism.

Future ambitions

Looking ahead, Alain dreams of becoming a producer who can support emerging talents. He also aspires to build an international career, believing that excellence will naturally attract global recognition.

Advice for aspiring actors

At the end of the interview, Alain had heartfelt advice for aspiring actors:

> “This new generation often joins the cinema world not because they love it, but because they chase fame and money. If you come to do what you don’t love, you will be disappointed. Love what you’re going to do first.”

Acknowledgments

Alain expressed deep gratitude to the people who supported his journey:
John Kwezi, Ibrahim (Muyobozi from Seburikoko), Nsengumuremyi Valens, and Niyitegeka Gratien.

Their guidance and encouragement, combined with Alain’s relentless passion, made his dreams possible.

Alain Gilbert Umuhire’s story is a testament to perseverance, humility, and self-belief. From a village boy with big dreams to one of Rwanda’s rising stars in cinema, he reminds us that opportunity favors those who are prepared — and that real success comes not from fame, but from the passion that lights the path.
