Kagoyire Rebecca: Rising above doubt to shine in Rwandan cinema

Kagoyire Rebecca, widely known as Mama Niyori, has become one of the most promising actresses in Rwanda’s film industry despite a journey that began with discouragement and doubt.

Rebecca has appeared in several notable films, including Ibanga by Nyambo Jesca, Intimba ya Lavie, Intambara y’Ubuzima, Agahinda k’Imfubyi, Agahinda k’Umubyeyi, Umuruho Wanjye, Maitresse (where she played the lead role), The Devil, and many others.

In her interview with Chita Magic, Rebecca reflected on her path, revealing that many people once told her she did not have what it takes to succeed as an actress. Instead of giving up, she turned the criticism into motivation, choosing to prove them wrong through hard work and dedication. Just two years into the industry, she has already earned recognition as one of Rwanda’s standout female actors.

Rebecca explained that while she is versatile and open to any role, she feels especially at home portraying vulnerable characters. “I can easily find tears, cry, and really enter into the character,” she said, noting that such roles allow her to connect more deeply with audiences.

Her determination and talent have not gone unnoticed. Rebecca is currently nominated in two categories — Best Actress and People’s Choice Actress — at the Mashariki African Film Festival, a milestone she describes as both humbling and inspiring.

Grateful for those who believed in her, Rebecca thanked her supporters, especially fellow actress Nyambo Jesca, who stood by her side from the start. She also expressed appreciation to her fans and to Chita Magic for continuously uplifting Rwanda’s cinema industry.

Rebecca’s journey is a story of resilience: from being told she couldn’t make it, to standing today as one of Rwanda’s most promising actresses. Her rise serves as a reminder that persistence, passion, and belief in one’s craft can overcome even the strongest doubts.
