The Rwandan anti-corruption community is mourning the loss of Ingabire Marie Immaculée, the long-serving Chairperson of Transparency International Rwanda (TI-Rwanda), who passed away on the morning of Thursday, October 9, 2025, after a period of illness. She was 64.

In a statement released the same day, TI-Rwanda expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a “beloved leader and advocate for integrity,” and extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.

Ingabire was among the founding members of TI-Rwanda in 2004 and was elected as its Chairperson in 2015, serving her second term with distinction. Over the years, she became one of the most outspoken voices against corruption and injustice in Rwanda, known for her firm yet principled approach to leadership.

Before joining Transparency International, Ingabire worked with various organizations that promoted women’s rights and social justice. She previously served at ORINFOR (the former Rwanda Information Office), contributed to several media outlets, and worked with advocacy groups such as Pro-Femmes Twese Hamwe and IBUKA.

In one of her past interviews, she reflected on her career path, saying:

“In all my work, I’ve always focused on defending women’s rights and empowering them to achieve lasting development.”

Though some perceived her as outspoken, Ingabire often clarified that her determination was rooted in her commitment to truth and justice.

“People sometimes think I’m harsh, but that’s a misunderstanding,” she once said. “My job often requires firm decisions, yet I’m a humble person by nature. I’ve never been one to fight or hold grudges.”

Throughout her life, Ingabire was guided by three core values: faith, respect, and perseverance — principles that defined both her personal and professional journey.

Her passing marks the end of an era for Rwanda’s governance and transparency movement. Ingabire leaves behind a legacy of courage, integrity, and unwavering service to her country.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.
