Iradukunda Grace Divine, popularly known as DJ Ira, one of the leading female DJs in Rwanda, is filled with immense joy after being granted Rwandan citizenship by President Paul Kagame.

This announcement was made during the Citizen Outreach “Kwegera Abaturage” program held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, marking the first such event since the launch of the NST2 program. “Kwegera Abaturage” is an initiative aimed at connecting the President with the citizens, providing a platform for discussions on national development and general well-being, as well as an opportunity for the public to voice their concerns and suggestions for national progress.

During the event, DJ Ira was given the chance to speak, expressing her gratitude for the equal opportunities Rwanda offers to both nationals and foreigners. She commended Rwanda for providing equal opportunities to both boys and girls, and took the opportunity to request formal recognition as a member of the Rwandan family.

She said, “This country has been an extraordinary blessing to me… My request was to be granted Rwandan citizenship, to officially be called a daughter of Rwanda and belong to this nation.”

Her plea was warmly received by the large crowd gathered at the BK Arena, particularly since she is one of the most celebrated figures in Rwanda’s music scene, known for her skill in music mixing.

In response, President Kagame said, “Did those responsible here hear that? Who does it concern? I am granting your request, and the rest is up to you to follow through. There is nothing more I need to say.

DJ Ira, overwhelmed with emotion, was met with cheers and applause from the audience, and the news spread rapidly on social media, where people continued to welcome her into the larger Rwandan family.

DJ Ira has been a prominent figure in the music mixing industry, a career she started in 2016 with the support of her cousin, DJ Bissoso, who helped her gain recognition in Rwanda.

DJ Bissoso introduced DJ Ira to Kigali in August 2015 after she completed her secondary education in Burundi.

Although DJ Ira had always dreamed of following in her cousin’s footsteps, her family initially discouraged her, asking her to finish her studies before pursuing a career in music. After completing her secondary education, she decided to pursue her passion for music mixing and is now one of the most sought-after DJs in Rwanda’s major events.
