What started with whispers of a “curse” on Rwandan rap took a dramatic turn as the energy at Icyumba Cya Rap shattered any lingering doubts. Despite early setbacks — from a rain-wrecked first attempt at an outdoor show to curfew constraints — Kigali’s rap scene proved its resilience on January 10th at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village (KCEV).

The venue overflowed with excitement as hip-hop lovers from Kigali and beyond packed every corner. Even the spacious entry points were overwhelmed with fans eager to witness Rwanda’s finest rappers take the stage.

Unpredictable Performances, Unwavering Energy

Though the night faced hiccups, with shuffled lineups and missed performances, the spirit of the show remained unbroken. Sky 2, K8 Kavuyo, Diplomate, Riderman, Jay C, Bushali, B Threy, and Ish Kevin, among others, delivered electrifying sets.

However, the highly anticipated Tuff Gang trio—P Fla, Green P, and Fireman—were unable to perform, leaving fans yearning for more. Frustrated attendees like Jules Igabe voiced their disappointment, “I came for Tuff Gang. I saw them, but no performance.”

Memorable Highlights and Surprises

Sky 2’s set concluded on a heartwarming note when he brought his wife on stage, silencing doubters who had questioned her existence in viral chants. DJ Ira kept the beats alive during breaks, spinning classic hits from Kanye West and Jay-Z, bringing a fresh sound to Kigali’s hip-hop scene.

In a touching tribute, Nyundo Music School’s live band honored the late Jay Polly by performing his iconic tracks, stirring emotions as the crowd sang along to classics like Ku Musenyi and Akanyarirajisho.

Bushali and B Threy ignited the stage with their Kinyatrap anthem, calling Slum Drip for a powerful rendition of Nituebue, a breakout track beloved by fans. Rising stars like Diez Dola also left their mark, delivering viral hits that continue to elevate the genre.

Celebrating Hip-Hop’s Rise

The night saw appearances from industry pioneers and supporters, including music veteran Mighty Popo and celebrity stylist Fred Lyon. Diplomate, a legend in Rwandan hip-hop, graced the stage with a semi-live performance, revisiting hits like Fasasi Wa Mbere and Umwe Bavuze.

Zeo Trap, a rising drill sensation, captivated the crowd with energetic choreography and tracks like Ibisimba Byaje. K8 Kavuyo redeemed himself after a previous lackluster performance, energizing fans with hits such as Hood Inyumve and Ndaguprefera.

Looking Forward to a Promising Future

Despite the challenges, Icyumba Cya Rap marked a pivotal moment for Rwandan hip-hop. Artists, organizers, and fans alike proved their dedication to fostering a growing hip-hop culture that continues to evolve and thrive.

As the night ended, one thing was clear: the momentum is unstoppable. Tuff Gang may have missed their mark, but anticipation is high for their promised homecoming show. What will 2025 bring for Rwandan hip-hop? If this night was any indication, the future looks bright.
