France Télévisions is preparing to unveil the second season of its acclaimed historical documentary series Notre Histoire de France (Our History of France) — this time with a renewed energy and a familiar yet powerful voice. Rwandan-French actress and former Miss France Sonia Rolland will lead the series as its narrator.

The new chapter, following a widely praised first season that debuted in October 2024 on France 2, continues to trace sixteen centuries of French history — from Antiquity to the Renaissance — through a more inclusive and contemporary lens. Directed by Caroline Benarrosh, Yannick Adam de Villiers, and François Tribolet, the series explores the events and figures that shaped the foundations of France’s national identity.

The upcoming episodes will explore defining moments and fascinating personalities that continue to influence France’s heritage. Among the highlights is a new portrayal of Marie-Antoinette, shedding light on her responsibilities and humanity during the French Revolution.

After a first season that captivated more than 2.6 million viewers, anticipation for the follow-up is high. The new season will premiere on France Télévisions in Paris on November 19, 2025, welcoming audiences of all ages.

Who is Sonia Rolland?

Born on February 11, 1981, in Kigali, Rwanda, Sonia Rolland is a French-Rwandan actress, model, and humanitarian. She made history in 2000 as the first woman of African descent to win Miss France, and went on to represent the country at the Miss Universe 2000 pageant in Cyprus, where she finished among the Top 10 finalists.

Rolland’s journey is one of resilience and transformation. Her family fled Rwanda in the early 1990s, first seeking refuge in Burundi before settling in France, in the small town of Cluny, Burgundy. It was there, at just 13 years old, that she began to rebuild her life — a chapter that would shape her discipline and drive.

Her acting career began after studying under Alain Delon, leading to her breakout role in the action series Léa Parker (2004–2006). Her strength and charisma quickly earned her a place among France’s most respected television talents.

Beyond acting, Rolland is an author and advocate. Her book Les Gazelles n’ont pas peur du noir (Gazelles Are Not Afraid of the Dark) tells her personal story — one of migration, identity, and empowerment. She also co-authored Beauté Black, a guide celebrating natural Afro-textured beauty and cultural pride.

A voice bridging two worlds

Rolland’s role as narrator in Notre Histoire de France represents more than storytelling — it symbolizes a bridge between Africa and Europe, two worlds that have profoundly shaped her life.

Her narration adds warmth and authenticity, linking France’s historical milestones with universal human themes of courage, displacement, and renewal. She reminds viewers that history is a living story — carried not only by those who lived it but also by those who continue to give it meaning today.

Outside her screen work, Rolland remains committed to educational and humanitarian initiatives in Rwanda, especially those supporting children affected by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Her upcoming documentary Rwanda Mon Amour (Rwanda My Love) continues her mission of truthful and inspiring storytelling, grounded in empathy and hope.

Looking ahead

With Sonia Rolland lending her voice, the second season of Notre Histoire de France promises to be both enlightening and emotionally resonant. It continues to blend cinematic artistry with historical insight, offering a fresh way to rediscover France’s cultural legacy.

More than a historical recount, it is a celebration of connection — between past and present, between France and the world — guided by a narrator whose own journey reflects strength, compassion, and the transformative power of history.
