Liverpool and Portugal star Diogo Jota killed in crash alongside his brother weeks after historic season

Diogo Jota, the Portuguese footballer who was playing for Liverpool and the national team, has died in a car crash at the age of 28. The accident happened early Thursday morning, July 3, 2025, in Spain. His brother André was also killed in the crash.

Jota had just married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on June 22. They shared three children together. His last Instagram post from the wedding read, “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.”

The tragedy comes just weeks after a series of major career successes. Jota had helped Liverpool win the 2024–25 Premier League title and had also played a key role in Portugal’s Nations League victory over Spain. He was expected to begin preseason training with Liverpool in early July.

Jota started his professional career at Paços de Ferreira before moving to Atlético Madrid, Porto (on loan), Wolverhampton Wanderers, and finally Liverpool in 2020. At Liverpool, he scored 47 goals in 123 appearances and became a fan favorite for his energy and goal-scoring ability.

His sudden death has shocked the football world. Tributes have poured in from teammates, fans, clubs, and fellow professionals. Liverpool FC, the Portuguese Football Federation, and many others have expressed their deep sorrow and condolences to his family.

Diogo Jota is remembered not only as a talented footballer but also as a devoted family man. He leaves behind his wife and three young children.
